Svaneti

Svaneti is Georgia’s one of the most mountainous regions, and rich with historical and cultural areas. The region is famous for its peaks, cliffs, fortified Svan towers, characteristic frescos, traditions, rituals and myths, and the deeply independent spirit of the Svan people.

Svaneti is the land of Golden Fleece; it is there that the epic legend of Jason and Argonauts took place, where the first inhabitants, mainly golden prospectors, settled. An ancient method of finding gold was to suspend a sheep’s coat in the rushing river, and after a short while it would be coated with gold flakes – the basis of the legend of Jason and his Golden Fleece. For centuries the Svans lived here, cut off from the outside world by the inaccessible mountains, and even today, their culture is remarkably preserved and intact.
